Course Description

Recommended for those with some knowledge of basic painting in oil and/or acrylic

Class includes discussion, demonstrations and instruction. Topics covered include color mixing, brushstroke technique, values, perception and composition.  Each class ends with a critique designed to help evaluate how students are progressing in a friendly, nurturing atmosphere. Enjoy the park view and paint outside if you like.

Materials List / Textbook

Supplies List: 
Paint Colors: Ultramarine blue,  Cerulean blue or Cerulean blue hue, Alizarin crimson, Cadmium red or Cadmium red light, Burnt Sienna, Burnt umber, Paynes grey, Yellow ochre, Cadmium yellow or lemon yellow, Titanium white, Sap green and Viridian green. Pease buy the highest quality that is within your price range, with paint you get what you pay for.  Golden, liquitex, Windsor Newton, Gamblin, blick are all good brands to start with.
Brushes: Detail brush, Square brush, Filbert brush, and An angle/dagger brush., Pick brushes based off of the size and subject matter of what you prefer to paint-synthetic work for both oil and acrylic. Natural bristles are used more for oil painting. Midrange brushes are more than adequate, very cheap brushes can shed their bristles getting caught in the paint on your canvas. If they come in a pack they are probably not quality. Don’t spend a fortune as that is not necessary but don’t skimp either, save yourself a headache. 

Palette paper: will most likely be the most convenient due to travel from class however I leave it up to your discretion, wax paper is a cheaper alternative. Many artists prefer to use glass palettes for oil painting with white or grey paper taped to the bottom.  
Palette Knife 
Solvent: Solvent/ Mineral spirits for oil painters please try to buy odorless such as gamsol. Acrylic artist use water in place of solvent. Bring a cup or jar for water/ solvent if necessary. 
Rag: Old cut up t-shirts, towels, kitchen rags work well
Easel:  If you prefer to work on an easel, bring one to class. 
Canvas: Something to paint on: such as  canvas or canvas board. You can also buy a pad of canvas paper if you don't want the pressure of a finished canvas or want to experiment 
Something to draw on your canvas with (examples: chalk pastels, charcoal, conte, stabilo pencils, colored pencils, oil pastels if using oil paints, acrylic paint can be used under oils and a pencil should only be used as the very last resort as it tends to bleed) 
Please bring some sort of reference material to paint in class. Something that inspires you to put paint on canvas.
