Course Description

Located 40 nautical miles from the Channel Islands National Park visitor center in Ventura, Santa Rosa is the second largest island in California at approximately 53,000 acres in size. The island's relatively low profile is broken by a high, central mountain range, rising 1,589 feet at its highest point. Its coastal areas are variable, ranging from broad, sandy beaches gently sloping toward a dynamic ocean to sheer cliffs plunging toward the turmoil of a sea intent on changing the contour of the land. The islands not only offer a delightful break from the congestion and clamor of urban life, but also numerous activities. Due to their relative isolation and protection, the tide pools in Channel Islands National Park are some of the best within southern California. Anemones, sea stars, urchins, limpets, periwinkles, chitons, barnacles, mussels and many other beautiful species can be seen at numerous pristine tide pool sites. We will drive to Ventura Harbor in a luxury bus while you catch up on your sleep or read a good book. Then enjoy a two-hour boat trip across the channel to the Benchers Bay landing area from Ventura Harbor. One of the most exciting things about the trip is that there is always a good chance of seeing blue or humpback whales and/or dolphins racing along with the boat in the deep water to and from the island. Santa Rosa is a naturalist’s paradise and is also the perfect place to hike or simply delight in the wildlife and scenery as you take those perfect pictures or draw with your sketch pad.
