Course Description

Downtown LA has changed, and in this small piece of it, you will have the chance to experience the energy fueling this dynamic city. Our first stop will be The Broad Contemporary Art Museum where you will enjoy a self-guided tour and see the stunning new installations. The Broad makes its home in the city’s burgeoning Grand Avenue Arts Corridor, across the street from architectural icons including Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Museum of Contemporary Art and is named for philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad who financed the $140 million building that houses The Broad art collections. The 120,000-square-foot building, which resembles a giant honeycomb, features two floors of gallery space and is the headquarters of The Broad Art Foundation’s worldwide lending library, which has been loaning collection works to museums around the world since 1984. Our next stop will be Grand Central Market, housed in the historic Homer Laughlin Building and located in the heart of Los Angeles. The building is the first steel-reinforced and fireproof structure. Operational since 1917, Grand Central Market was a one-stop destination housing grocers, butchers, bakers and fishmongers. Grand Central Market brings it all together for foodies in Los Angeles and is a must for anyone interested in the LA story from the beginning. Choose from a comprehensive selection of food from all over the world (as well as some of the best all-American choices). Across from the market and built in 1901 is the Angel’s Flight Railroad. You are welcome to take this optional self-guided mini adventure on the world’s shortest railroad. For $1.00 (each way), this 118-year-old funicular will take you on a short ride (298 feet) between Hill Street and Bunker Hill. From here, a mere .3 mile (2-minute walk), you will find what has been called one of the “20 most beautiful bookstores in the world.” The Last Bookstore is a 22,000 square foot wonderland of new and used books, vinyl records, graphic novels, galleries and shops in what is one of the largest independent bookstores left in the world and is not to be missed!
