Course Description

Step foot into this volcanic wonderland as our expert guide leads us through the ancient rocks along the trails, providing captivating insights into the volcano’s formation, geological significance, and the processes that worked to shape this extraordinary landscape. We will explore the geology of the Calavera Hills volcano and the surrounding Calavera Nature Preserve in Carlsbad, California.  The trip involves a 2-mile hike up to the top of Mount Calavera with numerous stops to examine rocks, soils, faults, landscape features, plants and animals. Additionally, we will visit the mine in the core of the volcano with further examination of regional geology and geologic history of the Northern San Diego County region. Capture the magic of Calavera Hills with stunning photographs as you explore its rugged beauty.

Activity Level: Moderately challenging route

• A field guide to the trip is available upon registration
• Transportation is not provided
• Wear good footwear for hiking
• Bring a backpack and a notebook (for taking notes), water, sunscreen, snacks, etc.
• Everyone should have a cell phone.
